The rise of the dark web has led to a huge increase in the amount of illegal drugs being sent from the Netherlands, one of the world’s largest drug producers, via letters and packages in the post. Ulbricht’s attorney suggested that the documents and chat logs were planted there by way of BitTorrent, which was running on Ulbricht’s computer at the time of his arrest. At the start of the trial, Ulbricht admitted to founding the Silk Road website, but claimed to have transferred control of the site to other people soon after he founded it.

Drug trafficking on darknet based marketplaces has become a highly concerning topic in law enforcement activities, recently.
